Athera Healthcare operates a sterile services application used by the UK NHS and Irish HSE to manage and track the cleaning, packaging and distribution of medical devices and equipment in hospitals. Their existing platform was an outdated Windows application built decades ago, which needed to be moved to the cloud and rebuilt as a modern web application - not just to improve the user experience, but to allow the company to properly manage distribution and updates to the application, which would otherwise be running outdated versions on old machines.
A key focus on the redesign and modernisation, was ensuring that all the flows were as simple and straightforward as possible - as they would be used in a cleaning room environment where workers go through a huge volume of equipment each day. Special attention was paid to the flows, to ensure they covered all the exact sterilisation requirements whilst being super clear to the user, and creating a simple and clean UI that would work responsively on a computer or tablet.
Tied in to the sterilisation process UI, a new admin dashboard was also designed to allow administrators to fully search and audit equipment, see when equipment is due to be replaced, and track the performance of the sterilisation process.
One of the main challenges on the project was documenting and capturing all of the existing application's features and capabilities, ensuring they were all covered in the redesign, and talking with a range of users to understand how a redesigned application would fit into their workflow without causing disruption or requiring re-training.
