Ownership Intelligence is a new core module in Lloyd's List Intelligence's Seasearcher platform, allowing users to view and analyse the ownership of vessels and companies, as well as the risks associated with them such as sanctioned owners and political exposure.
From a UX and Product Design perspective, this was a bit different to most design work, as just creating designs in Figma wouldn't cut it - we needed to make sure everything handled, moved and felt right, and could cope with a variety of different data and use cases, for example allowing users to easily navigate and understand company ownership structures which may have hundreds of entities.
This gave me a great chance to get hands on with code, and create fully functional working prototypes using the React Flow library. You can try out the prototype yourself here which lets you explore the ownership tree by expanding and collapsing entity levels, viewing relationships between selected entities, searching for specific entities and more. I used AI assistance (Cursor + Claude) to put the prototype together in a matter of hours, and over the course of the week get it in front of users to refine the feel and nail things down. In parallel, I put together full visual and UI designs in Figma, then together with the functional prototype - which was built on the same React Flow library as the production app - this allowed us to rapidly build out the module and get it into production.
As well as navigating the company ownership tree, users could view and download the same data in a nested table view, as well as viewing historic snapshots of vessel ownership in a timeline view displaying the changes over time.
